The M3GAN Franchise Appears to be Screeching to an Ungraceful Halt

On December 18, Universal Pictures confirmed that the M3GAN spinoff thriller, SOULM8TE, originally slated for a North American release on January 9, 2026, has been officially pulled from the calendar. What makes the move even more telling is that the film has released almost no official promotional material to date. Furthermore, Universal isn't planning to reschedule the release; instead, they are reportedly looking to sell the film off to another studio entirely.

The reason isn't hard to deduce.

M3GAN 2.0, released this past summer, performed far below expectations at the box office, effectively dumping a bucket of cold water on the entire franchise. Against this backdrop, doubling down on a spinoff is clearly a risk Universal isn't willing to take. The removal of SOULM8TE looks less like a scheduling adjustment and more like active damage control.

Creatively, the film was charted on a different path than the main M3GAN saga. SOULM8TE was billed as an erotic thriller starring Lily Sullivan, David Rysdahl, and Claudia Doumit, with Kate Dolan (You Are Not My Mother) serving as writer-director. Despite the tonal shift, the production team still retained the "horror golden duo"—James Wan and Jason Blum.

The premise certainly didn't lack a hook: a man, grieving the loss of his wife, acquires an AI android in an attempt to create a truly sentient partner. However, the experiment spirals out of control, and the harmless companion evolves into a deadly presence. Rather than relying on cheap jump scares, the story aimed to dig deeper into themes of "emotional co-dependence" and "technological overreach."

In a previous interview with Variety, Kate Dolan described SOULM8TE as a film about relationships and loneliness. She noted that despite technological advancements, there are core human truths we cannot escape, and she intended to use the movie to explore those often-overlooked emotional crevices.

However, given the current situation, that avenue of expression has been hit with a hard pause—at least at Universal. Whether SOULM8TE will manage a "resurrection via sale" and eventually meet audiences, or fade into obscurity, now depends entirely on whether another distributor is willing to pick up the pieces.
