Helldivers 2 CCO: Rather Than Making a Sequel, He'd Rather Add "8-Player Missions" and "Bigger Maps" to the Current Game

Arrowhead Game Studios has previously stated that Helldivers 3 is likely "many, many years" away, as the development team's focus remains entirely on expanding and supporting Helldivers 2 for as long as players remain interested.

The company's Chief Creative Officer (CCO) and Creative Director Johan Pilestedt has even hinted that Helldivers 2 could one day essentially become Helldivers 3 through continuous evolution. Now, we're getting a clearer picture of what that evolution might actually look like.

What Counts as a "Sequel-Level" Feature?

During what was described as a "very democratic conversation" with the studio, Pilestedt was asked which "sequel-level features" he'd like to see added before the game is truly ready to transform into a successor. His response:

"There are many, actually. Given that this is a sequel-like development approach, I think the community has a pretty good nose for where the game should go."

The Arrowhead exec then dropped a few heavyweight ideas:

  • 8-player missions: "8-player missions is one of them."
  • Larger open-world maps: "The kind of massive maps where you could run into other Helldiver squads and team up to tackle bigger challenges."
  • Cross-squad coordination: "Operations where your actions directly affect other squads—that's also sequel-level stuff."

The Goal: Amplifying the Scale of the Galactic War

Pilestedt explained that "sequel-level features" essentially means anything that can "really emphasize the atmosphere of the Galactic War and the scale of the conflict." Bigger maps, more Helldivers (and presumably more bugs, bots, and "squids") would certainly be ways to achieve that.

Rather than abandoning Helldivers 2 to build Helldivers 3 from scratch, introducing these features through major updates seems like the more appealing path forward.

Reality Check: These Are Ideas, Not Promises

It's worth noting that Pilestedt didn't provide a specific timeline for these "sequel-level" changes—or even guarantee they'll happen. This isn't an official confirmation of 8-player missions.

There are also some practical hurdles to consider. Arrowhead's CEO has mentioned that increasing lobby sizes isn't currently on the table, since 16 players on screen at once could result in a brutal "16 frames per second" performance nightmare. As he put it: "We're trying to fix performance, not kill it."

That said, the game's future roadmap is steadily taking shape, with the team already discussing the next four story arcs. For players, while there may be some waiting involved, this vision of "upgrading in place" is undoubtedly more exciting than a sequel that's nowhere on the horizon.
