Difficulty Settings in Where Winds Meet

Where Winds Meet currently offers four difficulty levels, with a fifth (Hardcore) planned for a future update.

Story Mode

The easiest setting, designed for players who want to focus on narrative and exploration. Combat-assist features, such as auto-counter (parry assist) and time-stop prompts, are available, making battles more forgiving.

Recommended Mode

The balanced option, where you get to experience the challenges of the game. Assist features remain available but can be turned off for a more engaging experience. This is the default choice for most players.

Expert Mode

A step up in challenge with tougher enemies and higher health pools. Some assist features may be limited compared to lower difficulties.

Legend Mode

The hardest standard difficulty setting. Key characteristics include:

  • Significantly increased enemy health and damage
  • All combat-assist features are disabled (no time-stop prompts, parry cues, or extended attack windows)
  • It can only be selected at the very start of the game and cannot be changed later.
  • If you switch down from Legend to a lower difficulty, you lose Legend status permanently—you can't return to Legend on that character.
  • Each time you kill a boss in Legendary mode, you will earn a badge for that boss, plus a unique red health bar aura.

Hardcore Mode (Coming Soon)

It will function like a roguelike mode, meaning it will feature permadeath. Even a single death will result in a game over for that character, and you'll lose them permanently.

Switching Difficulties

You can switch between Story, Recommended, and Expert at any time outside of battles in the game. Go to Settings → Game → Combat Difficulty.

However, Legend is the exception: to access it after choosing another difficulty, you must begin a fresh playthrough, which will force you to be on an entirely separate account.

Which Should You Choose?

  • Story or Recommended: Best for players interested in narrative, exploration, and a balanced experience
  • Expert: For those wanting more challenge while retaining flexibility
  • Legend: Only for players confident in their combat skills who wish to prestige badges and an actual Soulslike experience—but remember, this choice is permanent
