The Witcher 3 director: Blames AI-made games for lacking soul!

Konrad Tomaszkiewicz, director of The Witcher 3, recently said in an interview that he believes a game created entirely by artificial intelligence would be “soulless” and lack the human elements that make games special.

“I don’t think AI will replace creative people,” Tomaszkiewicz said. “It can serve as assistance, but it cannot replace them. I don’t think a game made entirely by AI would have a soul. I really don’t.”

However, Tomaszkiewicz acknowledges that AI can play a positive role in game development. He supports using AI to assist humans rather than replace them in creative processes. Based on this philosophy, he believes that “AI should help humans, not replace them,” and that it should be a tool to make developers’ work easier.

This is a thoughtful and sincere stance—enough to restore some goodwill toward CD Projekt after its recent struggles. I have to admit, I’m envious of players whose first experience with The Witcher 3 will be this updated version; it’s the best way to play the game to date.

Tomaszkiewicz further elaborated by applying this logic to the development of his upcoming game, Dawnwalker’s Blood. His QA team is currently examining the game world, checking for gaps in the mesh that could cause players to fall through. He believes tasks like these are better suited to AI, which would free up developers’ time so they can focus on “telling me whether the game is actually good.”
