Apple is developing a new HMO display technology that promises to reduce iPhone power consumption and cost.

A November 14th report states that High Mobility Oxide (HMO) technology is poised to be another major upgrade for future iPhone displays. ETNews reports that the tech giant is developing a new type of panel that not only significantly reduces power consumption but also effectively lowers production costs. Compared to the current mainstream oxide thin-film transistor (TFT) technology, HMO technology significantly enhances electron mobility, thereby bringing these advantages to mobile devices.

TFTs control pixel operation by regulating current through ultra-thin layers of various materials. HMO technology goes a step further, improving current transmission efficiency—the bottleneck of existing oxide TFTs—thus accelerating signal processing and reducing overall power consumption. The report states that HMOs' cost advantage lies in their fewer manufacturing steps and equipment. This makes it more cost-effective than the Low Temperature Polycrystalline Oxide (LTPO) technology currently used in high-end iPhones.

However, when HMO technology will actually be applied to iPhones remains unknown. Furthermore, the report did not disclose which supplier Apple is collaborating with to develop the HMO panel. Previous reports have also indicated that Apple plans to extend the dual OLED technology used in the iPad Pro to the iPhone, but this is unlikely to happen before 2028.
