Tech media Android Authority reported today (December 9) that Google has acknowledged display problems affecting the Pixel 9 Pro series and has launched a free Extended Repair Program in response.

According to the report, Google has identified specific failure modes for the Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL. If a user’s phone displays a vertical line running from the bottom to the top of the screen or experiences screen flickering, the device qualifies for free repair under the program.

Google promises that for devices confirmed to have these display defects, it will provide a free display replacement for up to three years from the original retail purchase date, significantly extending the standard warranty period.

Although Google has also included the Pixel 9 Pro Fold in this extended repair program, it has not listed specific display defect criteria for that model. The official announcement only states that the plan covers issues that affect the device’s functionality. This means Fold users with non-physical, functional abnormalities need to have their device evaluated at a repair center to determine eligibility for free service.

Google has set strict eligibility requirements, and not all Pixel 9 Pro series devices will automatically meet the qualifications. The company clearly states that phones with cracked screens, damaged cover glass, or signs of liquid intrusion are excluded from this extended repair program. Devices with physical damage from accidents or misuse must use the standard warranty (if applicable) or pay for repair outside of warranty.

The extended repair program is now in effect. Affected users can apply for service through Google walk-in repair centers, authorized service partners, or online repair channels. All devices repaired under this program will automatically receive an additional 90-day warranty on the replaced parts or fixed issues, providing further protection after the sale.
