At the 2025 Game Awards, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 became the night’s biggest winner, taking home nine awards, including Game of the Year (GOTY). But the accolades didn’t just bring trophies — they also drove a significant surge in sales.
According to estimates from game data analytics firm Alinea Analytics, Expedition 33 sold nearly 200,000 additional copies in a short span after the TGA ceremony ended on December 11. On the Saturday immediately following the awards show, it sold an impressive 90,000 copies. For comparison, in the three months leading up to the event, the game had averaged about 12,000 daily sales.
This explosive growth pushed Clair Obscur: Expedition 33’s total sales past 6 million units. The game had only reached 5 million in October — meaning it sold 1 million units in just two months after that milestone.
PC Dominates the Post-TGA Sales Boost
Alinea Analytics estimates that the sales increase was heavily skewed toward PC:
- Steam contributed ~76% of the new sales.
- PS5 accounted for ~21%.
- The Xbox Series X|S accounted for only around 3%.
Analysts believe the low Xbox share was primarily due to the game's availability on Xbox Game Pass at launch, which reduced the number of paid purchases on that platform. Still, data suggests around 52,000 Xbox players launched the game on Game Pass for the first time during this period. (Game Pass usage doesn’t count as paid sales, but it still signals high engagement.)
Not Just New Players — Old Fans Came Back Too
The TGA bump didn’t just attract new players; it also reignited interest among existing ones. The developers simultaneously released a “Raid Update” that added features such as photo mode, more challenging boss fights, new music, and new environments, giving returning players a reason to return. According to Steam data, Expedition 33’s peak player count was around 17,000 before the ceremony, and surged to 40,000–57,000 after the update and awards boost.
This isn’t the First TGA-driven spike.
Interestingly, this isn’t the first time TGA buzz helped Expedition 33 sell more copies. After the TGA nomination announcement on November 17, the game sold an extra 393,000 copies over the next three weeks — far outperforming other nominees like Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, which only gained about 131,000 copies during the same span.
Industry analysts note that the “Game of the Year effect” from the TGA remains one of the strongest drivers of post-award sales in the industry, delivering both short-term spikes and long-term attention for major winners.
