According to 9to5Mac today, shortly after the release of macOS 26, developers discovered that Electron-based apps trigger severe GPU overload due to incompatibility with the system’s new default window corner-mask behaviour.

As detailed in a blog post (via modezone.com), simply having an Electron app open—even if it’s not in use—causes widespread scrolling stutter and UI lag across the entire system. Several major companies have since released app-specific fixes, meaning users must wait for individual updates from each affected Electron app.

However, Apple has now resolved the compatibility issue at the system level in the latest macOS 26.2 beta.

The fix was first spotted by user Normarayr, who had been maintaining a list of affected Electron apps. After updating to macOS 26.2 beta, he found all stuttering issues had disappeared entirely across the board.

The root cause stems from some Electron apps improperly modifying private AppKit APIs. Rather than waiting for every Electron developer to patch their apps, Apple implemented a comprehensive system-level solution.

Note that macOS 26.2 is currently in developer beta and is expected to be publicly released in mid-December 2025. Users experiencing the issue who prefer not to install the beta will need to wait a little longer.
