Apple published its 2025 annual list of the most downloaded apps and games in the United States this Wednesday. In the free iPhone apps (non-game) category, OpenAI’s ChatGPT claimed the No. 1 spot, becoming the most installed free application among U.S. iPhone users this year.

Following ChatGPT, the top 10 free iPhone apps were: Threads, Google, TikTok – Videos, Shop & LIVE, WhatsApp Messenger, Instagram, YouTube, Google Maps, Gmail – Email by Google, and Google Gemini.

Notably, ChatGPT was ranked only fourth in 2024, when Chinese shopping app Temu took the top position. In 2023, despite launching on iPhone in May and getting a strong start, it did not make the year’s top-10 list. This year’s performance shows ChatGPT has surpassed mainstream social and utility apps such as Instagram, Threads, and Google Maps, reflecting how deeply artificial intelligence has integrated into everyday mobile usage in the U.S. and how users increasingly turn to AI chatbots for answers instead of traditional search engines.

Apple also shared the most downloaded paid apps and games across iPhone and iPad platforms, as well as the most popular titles on its Apple Arcade subscription service:
