It’s been 13 years since the Splinter Cell series last received a new mainline entry. Since Ubisoft announced a remake of the original game in 2021, fans have had little to hold onto beyond a few rumours and a long stretch of silence, without any concrete progress updates.
However, things are turning around recently. David Grivel, the game director who initially led the project but left in 2022, has returned to Ubisoft Toronto and is once again taking charge of development on the Splinter Cell remake.
After leaving Ubisoft, Grivel went on to work at EA’s Ridgeline Games and the newer studio Worlds Untold, but both companies later shut down. Now, he has officially announced his return on LinkedIn, saying the project holds special meaning for him.
His comeback could bring much-needed stability to development—after all, frequent changes in game directors often signal turbulence behind the scenes. While the remake’s development hasn’t appeared smooth in the past, a source reportedly claimed in May that the remake’s current state is genuinely impressive, rekindling hope among fans.
In recent years, Splinter Cell fans have endured far too many “boy who cried wolf” moments. Yet with the original director returning, the project may finally be finding its footing again.
