According to tech website Wccftech, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang responded to Elon Musk's proposed mega-chip factory plan, stating that reaching TSMC's manufacturing capabilities is virtually impossible.
At a recent shareholder meeting, Musk revealed that Tesla plans to build a large factory to support custom chip projects such as "AI5," expressing his hope that the factory will eventually be able to produce up to one million chips per month.
Huang, visiting Taiwan, commented:
"Building an advanced chip factory is extremely difficult. It's not just about building a factory—it involves the engineering, scientific methods, and sophisticated processes that TSMC relies on for its survival. Doing that is incredibly difficult."
Huang bluntly stated that chip manufacturing is not a skill that can be mastered overnight. He pointed out that even companies like Intel, which have long attempted to become integrated device manufacturers (IDMs) and foundries, still face enormous challenges.
According to reports, Musk's idea stems from his concerns that TSMC, Samsung Electronics, and possibly Intel may not be able to meet Tesla's custom chip needs. This has prompted Tesla to consider entering the chip manufacturing field itself through its so-called "TeraFab" factory, with a potential investment of hundreds of billions of dollars.
According to a report cited by IT House, Jensen Huang is expected to meet with TSMC executives to discuss the supply chain situation. TSMC has become a core manufacturing partner for Nvidia's AI chips and remains its sole semiconductor supplier.
