With only 18 days left until the official release of Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, IGN played a little over an hour of the game and immediately complained about one issue: “Everything was going smoothly… until expert Miles McKenzie showed up and ruined the peace.”
Miles McKenzie is a talkative NPC who joins the party early in the game and appears to accompany the protagonist, Samus Aran, on her journey.
According to IGN, this extremely stereotypical, “American-style” buck-toothed science nerd is precisely what worsens the gameplay experience.
Earlier reports noted that IGN spent a significant portion of its article criticising this newly added NPC, accusing him of constantly talking, yelling, and offering unnecessary hints that disrupt the experience and feel extremely annoying.
The editor wrote: “He keeps throwing out bizarre hints, silly quips, and cries for help, breaking the Metroid series’ traditionally solitary and mysterious atmosphere.”
Another Nintendo-focused outlet, Nintendo Life, even burst out in frustration during their preview video, shouting: “Just shut up!”—a reaction that shows precisely how unlikable this character seems to be.
Additionally, VGC remarked bluntly that forcing a chatty character into a series known for its near-total lack of dialogue is a “180-degree turn” that severely undermines the tension and overall experience. So far, they said, Metroid Prime 4doesn’t feel like a Metroid game at all, and they are worried.
Although we haven’t played the game yet and cannot know exactly how this character is designed or why multiple outlets are criticising him, we’ll likely get a clear sense of his impact once the game launches. At that point, we can form our own judgment.
