How many bugs are there in GTA 5's first-person mode? Why does GTA 5 have so many bugs?

Former Rockstar Games animator Mike York posted a video on YouTube yesterday, discussing the impact of the Grand Theft Auto VI delay and sharing some interesting anecdotes from his time developing Grand Theft Auto V.

York stated that during his tenure at Rockstar, he worked on GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2, and that several factors contributed to the postponement of GTA VI. He believes that creating a new game often involves introducing many new systems and mechanics, and that for GTA VI, these latest additions likely caused development to take much longer than initially expected.

For example, York explained that when he was working at Rockstar, he added the first-person mode to GTA V. Although adding a new camera perspective might seem straightforward, when they activated the mode, they found thousands of bugs. They ended up spending a considerable amount of time, patience, and effort testing and refining the new mode.

York argued that the reason so many bugs appeared was that GTA V was developed initially completely for the third‑person view. They could not simply move the camera to the character’s head; to achieve natural visuals, they had to remake the reload animation for each weapon, redraw all interior vehicle textures, and optimize models that were not initially designed for close-up viewing. He added that in first‑person mode, the motion of the character’s head is significant — even a slight oddity will cause the player to feel something is “off”. They spent a considerable amount of time and resources on tuning this part, yet in the end, they did not delay the release of GTA V’s first-person mode.

York bluntly stated that open-world games, such as the GTA series, are far more complex than linear titles like The Last of Us. The number of places requiring debugging grows exponentially, and he believes that Rockstar’s delay of GTA VI is likely due to encountering challenges when adding new systems late in the development process.

Previously reported, GTA VI has been pushed back to November 19, 2026, from its originally scheduled release date of May 26, 2026, a delay of more than six months. Rockstar North is leading the game and has been in production since 2018, with Rockstar’s New York studio and other global teams collaborating.
