According to a report from Kotaku, airing a game trailer during “the Oscars of gaming,” The Game Awards (TGA), can cost as much as $1 million USD (about ¥7.06 million RMB). The report cites two anonymous industry sources who revealed that the price of securing a three-minute trailer slot at TGA has now exceeded $1 million.
Two game publishers told Kotaku that although they were not familiar with the exact pricing for this year, the figure sounds consistent with expectations from previous years.
Last year, the official TGA YouTube stream accumulated 14 million views. Roughly estimated—assuming all 14 million viewers watched the entire show (which is unlikely)—the cost per thousand impressions (CPM) works out to about $70.
Whether such pricing is worthwhile for developers and publishers is something only they can determine. It’s widely known that Geoff Keighley likes to offer free showcase spots for major announcements and specific indie titles. Therefore, without further confirmation from additional sources, it remains challenging to determine whether these paid ad slots truly offer good value.
Even though $1 million is a steep price, it applies only to the longest trailer length. Shorter trailers come at lower costs.
