Final Fantasy VII Remake is set to launch on Switch 2 and Xbox on January 22, 2026, and this new version introduces a completely new feature — the “Streamlined Progression” mode. Essentially a “cheat mode,” it enables players to experience the full story with minimal obstacles.

According to the description, this mode includes: infinite HP with total immunity to enemy attacks, infinite MP for unrestricted skill use, and fixed 9999 damage on all attacks, among other enhancements.

Reports indicate that this new mode sparked some internal debate within Square Enix, but Co-Director Naoki Hamaguchi believes that it should ultimately be up to players to decide whether to use it.

In an interview with Automaton, Hamaguchi explained that the addition of this feature was his personal initiative:

“Naturally, when we announced this feature, some people said, ‘That’s blasphemy!’ Even within the development team, there were those who felt that way. But if no one takes the initiative, changes like this would never happen. Personally, I believe that in today’s digital entertainment environment, players should have the right to choose how they experience content — that’s why I insisted on adding it.”

Hamaguchi also mentioned that with “Streamlined Progression” enabled and all cutscenes skipped, players could finish the game in under 10 hours, or even 7 to 8 hours if they rush through. Still, he expressed hope that players will take the time to experience the game in its entirety.
