Tech‑media outlet 9to5Mac yesterday (Nov 20) published a blog post reporting that Liberty Media CEO Derek Chang revealed that Apple Inc. is moving into a new phase of partnership with the Formula One (F1) series.
Chang stated that, based on Apple's securing exclusive U.S. streaming rights for F1 for the next five years, the two parties have already begun active discussions about cooperation on multiple additional levels. This development signals that Apple will further deepen its footprint in the sports‑event space, far beyond the current scope of collaboration.
When discussing the existing cooperation with Apple, Chang emphasised the central role of technology in modern sports broadcasting. He pointed out that the current media landscape has undergone a complete transformation: the coverage of events is no longer limited to a 90‑minute live window on Sunday.
He said that because Apple possesses a robust technology ecosystem, it can provide F1 coverage in an “always‑online” manner, significantly enhancing both content and overall viewer experience, and further expanding F1’s brand awareness and global recognition.
Regarding whether Apple will seek global streaming rights for F1, Chang’s response nearly confirmed the speculation:
“I think Apple will be very active. We’re in multiple discussions with them on several fronts.”
Although he added that there are no specific details to announce at this stage, he clearly views the relationship as a “powerful partnership.” He anticipates that the model could be replicated in other regions.
Besides competition‑broadcasting, Chang also mentioned the success of the film F1: Drive to Survive (note: verifying title) starring Brad Pitt, which broke box‑office records for both the actor and for a sports movie.
He argued that the film's success not only brought substantial commercial returns for both parties but also demonstrated the vast potential of Apple & F1 in content co-creation, laying a solid foundation for deeper, broader collaboration in the future.
