Steam Wishlist Data Reveals Surprising Trends
Game industry analytics firm GameDiscoverCo has released a new report examining the relationship between Steam wishlists and actual sales performance, covering data from September 2024 to September 2025. The findings shed light on what truly determines a game’s post-launch success.
The research shows that adult-oriented games have not only remained remarkably stable in sales performance, but also achieved the highest wishlist conversion rate among all game categories — even under increased scrutiny from global payment processors.
Adult Titles Lead in Conversion Efficiency
According to GameDiscoverCo founder Simon Carless, multiple factors affect a game’s commercial outcome — including release timing, genre, review quality, and the time gap between a game’s Steam page launch and its release date.
On average, the report found a wishlist conversion rate of 0.15, meaning that roughly 15 out of every 100 wishlists result in a purchase, a figure higher than industry expectations.
However, adult games far exceeded this benchmark. Analysts attribute this to the high engagement and purchasing intent of their relatively small but dedicated audiences.
“Their player bases may be niche, but they convert interest into spending at an extraordinary rate,” the report notes, calling adult games “statistical outliers” that significantly boost Steam’s overall sales metrics.
Early Wishlists Don’t Always Mean Strong Sales
Another key insight from the study concerns the timing of wishlist availability. Games that appear on Steam too early before launch tend to lose visibility and player enthusiasm over long waiting periods.
“A long pre-release window can backfire,” Carless wrote. “Players lose interest if there’s too much time between wishlist and release.”
This suggests that shorter, well-timed marketing cycles may be more effective at converting wishlists into real purchases — especially for indie developers competing for attention.
Why It Matters
- Adult games dominate conversion charts, demonstrating that smaller, highly motivated audiences can outperform mainstream genres.
- Overall conversion rates are improving, signaling healthier engagement across Steam’s ecosystem.
- Strategic release timing remains one of the most controllable factors for developers seeking stronger day-one sales.
GameDiscoverCo’s findings add fresh nuance to how developers and publishers interpret wishlist numbers — reminding the industry that not all wishlists are created equal, and that audience intent often matters more than scale.
