With the release of a major update for Assassin's Creed: Shadows—featuring a collaboration with Attack on Titan and a new storyline quest "The Unsolvable Riddle"—Ubisoft not only defended the game’s microtransaction system but also attempted to clarify their update plans for long-time fans after the game's launch.

"The Unsolvable Riddle" is designed as a fun additional storyline where Naoe and Yusuke further develop their relationship. After completing the quest, both characters will unlock new abilities, inspired by each other's skills. However, this new quest will also guide players to a much longer exploration path. Several hours into the game, players will unlock a mysterious Isu Door, leading to a hidden treasure trove full of secrets.

According to Simon Lemay-Comtois, the co-game director of Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, in an interview with Access the Animus, "Don’t expect a full Isu temple or a two-hour epic adventure. It’s not that kind of content. It’s just a treasure trove that you need to unlock, containing some interesting items and story revelations."

Meanwhile, the in-game store for Assassin’s Creed: Shadows continues to feature a variety of optional cosmetic items. Despite the series having included such items for nearly a decade, some players continue to criticize the "pay-for-cosmetics" model in premium games.

In response, game director Simon Lemay-Comtois explained that the updates for Assassin’s Creed: Shadows require substantial ongoing funding.

"Although microtransactions are controversial, it’s through them that we’re able to develop Isu-related content, mission updates, and parkour system improvements. All of these subsequent updates wouldn’t be possible without it."
