Riot Games has announced that League of Legends is set for a major overhaul beyond 2026, marking what could be the biggest update in the 16-year-old game's history. Riot says the revamp will bring a brand-new "around-game" client, a comprehensive visual rework of Summoner's Rift, and a more welcoming experience for new players overall—with even more yet to be revealed.
Bloomberg first reported earlier this week that Riot is planning a massive refresh for League of Legends in 2027, internally codenamed "League Next." Shortly after the report went live, Riot Games officially confirmed the plans via a video on League of Legends' official social media channels. League of Legends head Andrei Van Roon stated that the video was originally scheduled for release next January. Still, due to Bloomberg's early reveal, the studio decided to go public ahead of schedule.

While Riot notes that development on this update is well underway, they aren't quite ready to show specific content to the public just yet. However, the studio has outlined several core changes coming down the pipeline.
First and foremost is a brand-new "around-game" client. This client will be integrated with the game itself, delivered as a single, unified application.
Secondly, Summoner's Rift is getting a comprehensive upgrade, according to the studio.

As such, this massive overhaul is likely aimed at attracting new and returning players. In the official video, Riot even stated that once the update is complete, it will be the "best time ever to bring friends into League."
In recent years, Riot has continued to expand the League of Legends IP, launching multiple spinoffs, including the new trading card game Riftbound, the fighting game 2XKO, and the widely acclaimed Netflix animated series Arcane. At the same time, Riot has become increasingly willing to experiment boldly with the main League game, implementing major changes to Summoner's Rift, adding new jungle bosses, and even introducing new themed seasonal modes.
Riot says that more details regarding this massive overhaul will be revealed in the second half of next year, roughly falling between its two major esports events—MSI and Worlds.
